3D in TV!

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Want more action from watching your favorite ballgame?

Want to be really up close to the action?

Or you just want more from your newly installed hi-definition large-screen TV?

Well, you can stop wanting as a new dimension comes to your TV sets this June 11.

ESPN will be launching their 3D programming this year.

And with a World Cup soccer match (South Africa vs Mexico) at that.

The network has actually been testing their 3D capabilities for some time now. And come June they will officially be the first three-dimensional television network. They have so far identified about 85 live sporting events scheduled for showing. Initial plans are that they will have no reruns. Consequently, this means the screen will be blank or dark when there are no event scheduled for showing. But that would probably be only until they get more programs in their schedule.

Included in the events they already have slated are NBA games, Collee Football, College Basketball and the Summer X Games.

Oh, and to add to that news… Discovery has announced that they too will go 3D this year. Now imagine all those sharks, lions, tigers and crocs charging through your screen. :-)

Discover will be partnering up with Sony and IMAX for the 24×7 channel.

New Bohemian Rhapsody

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Try to imagine an over 70-strong ensemble doing a rather special rendition of the classic song Bohemian Rhapsody. Now imagine watching the entire thing in 1080p true high-resolution video!

No, it isn’t the band Queen doing a comeback concert.  Nor is it a huge philharmonic orchestra in center stage.

It’s actually the Muppets!

Yes, thats right. It’s those lovable creatures from Jim Henson.

Kermit and Ms. Piggy together with the entire gang is at it again. This time they give out their own take of the top hit from the 70′s. As usual, everybody had their own part in the now viral video on the web (with over seven millions hits within the first week).

The Animal sings while drumming. Statler and Waldorf dishes out their usual contemptuous rudeness. Beaker renders very rhythmical squeals. Even the chickens have their bit. All to be seen in currently the highest possible video resolution (1080p) as recently supported by YouTube.

It was simply hilarious to see how they interpreted the song’s operatic theme, a cappella portion, and rock solo. :-)

Flash Mob in Oprah’s Show

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

What’s a flash mob?

It’s when a large group of people suddenly assemble in a public place and perform an unusual action for a brief time. And to the surprise of Oprah and numerous viewers, one such performance was executed during the recent kickoff for the 24th season of Oprah’s show.

With a group of about 21,000 people, the choreographed dance was done to the song “I Gotta Feeling” as performed by the Black Eyed Peas on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile . :-)

It all started with just one girl doing a rather “bouncy” dance routine in front of the huge crowd. Then gradually, just like a viral infection — the dance bug spread across to the rest of the crowd.

The event was produced by Michael Gracey who was also responsible for a famous similar flash mob dance at a Liverpool train station.

So how did they do it?

It seems that long before the show started, professional dancers collaborated and taught a very good sampling of the crowd the moves for the dance. They tried to make the participants as diverse as they really can. There were people from all walks of life, from 65-year-old women to 16-year old high school kids.

For a video on how they actually made it all work, you can watch this video from Oprah’s site.

The Next American Idol Judge!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

When Paula Abdul hinted as early as last year that she was leaving the top rating reality show American Idol, numerous possible replacements ran through my mind. But I have to admit, this particular possibility never entered my mind. :-)

Paula Abdul

And now, presenting the newest judge for American Idol…

Yup. It’s true. Top daytime host Ellen DeGeneres is going to jump into the evening primetime slot and be the 4th judge for AI. She will be completing the judging cast for the singing reality show together with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.

It’s not that I don’t believe Ellen will be a good judge. It just never occurred to me that AI will be getting a judge outside of the music industry. This is a surprising decision indeed from the producers of the show.

Fans would definitely miss not seeing Abdul on the panel. But for sure Ellen is going to bring a fresh new perspective. The producers are targeting this will be enough to sustain or further lift viewership for the upcoming 9th season of the show.

I guess it is true, you never know what’s going to happen in reality TV.

Tonight with Conan!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Its going to be a different evening for avid viewers of NBC’s long-running The Tonight Show.

Last Friday saw the final night of Jay Leno hosting the third longest-running entertainment program in U.S. television history. As was decided way back in 2004, Conan O’Brien is going to take over the hosting chores from Leno. After a very long wait, that day (or night) has finally arrived. June 1 sees the premiere of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.

O’Brien has signed off as host of his “Late Night” show since last February with Jimmy Fallon of ”Saturday Night Live” replacing him.

For the new show, Conan is going to be joined by former sidekick Andy Richter as “announcer”. Max Weinberg and his band would also still be with O’Brien’s crew.

The first show will have Will Farrell and Pearl Jam as guests.

All these should make an interesting “Tonight” indeed. :-)
